Unlocking Europe’s Space Financing Potential

The space sector in Continental Europe and the UK is undergoing rapid transformation, powered not only by major institutional programmes but also by a diverse and growing community of SMEs and midcaps. These companies are central to technological sovereignty and global competitiveness yet continue to face barriers in securing the full range of financing required to expand.

Equity investment has grown significantly in recent years, but equity alone cannot sustain companies through the scaling phase. In other sectors such as energy and infrastructure, debt financing has been a critical driver of growth — yet in space it remains underdeveloped. Without new approaches to reduce risk for lenders and increase access to financing, firms risk losing ground or relocating abroad.

Atlantic Alliance, with support from ESA’s Ventures and Financing Office, has produced a report that draws on the perspectives of leading lenders across the region. Credit Horizons - Unlocking Debt Financing in the Evolving Space Economy highlights financing shortfalls, examines potential remedies, and outlines concrete recommendations to unlock the role of debt financing in space. For entrepreneurs, investors, and policymakers, the message is clear: Continental Europe and the UK have the innovation and market momentum to lead — but strengthening the financial foundations of the sector is essential to maintain competitiveness.
